NYMAG (New York Martial Arts Gym) HISTORY

Founded in 1997, NYMAG is The Mid Hudson Valley's First Mixed Martial Arts and Black Belt Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Academy and has produced fighters and champions at the Highest Level of competition in both Grappling and MMA. In addition to recreational practitioners who enjoy the benefits of fitness and self defense, fighters who have trained at NYMAG or have been coached by our instructors have gone on to claim victories at the Highest Levels of MMA and Grappling Competition in reputable & established venues such as the UFC, WEC, King of the Cage, the Pan American & World Championships.

NYMAG offers the highest quality and level of instruction for both the recreational student and serious athlete alike; all are welcome and treated equally. This gives the hobbyist a unique opportunity to experience training with the best and those who want to be the best a fighting chance.
NYMAG has hosted some of the best fighters and instructors in the World and we continue that tradition by providing Authentic, World Class instruction in every style that we teach.

Modern Mixed Martial Arts competition was invented by Brazilian Jiu-jitsu practitioners in order to showcase their style as superior. Before becoming popular here in the U.S., it was known as "Vale Tudo" (anything goes) in Brazil. We were the first school in the area to teach Vale Tudo, long before "Mixed Martial Arts" was a popular phrase or accepted as a sport.  In the first few Ultimate Fighting competitions, Brazilian Jiu-jitsu was pitted against nearly every style of martial arts and easily came out dominant, even over other grappling styles despite enormous weight differences. A 170lb Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ) practitioner wearing a Jiu-jitsu Gi defeated much heavier and accomplished practitioners of Judo, Wrestling, Submission Wresting, Karate, Kung Fu, Kickboxing and Boxing. When the point was made overwhelmingly that BJJ was the most complete martial art, fighters began to realize that they had to know it in order to beat it. Promoters soon realized that they needed to add rules, time limits and rounds in order to attract an American public who was used to watching striking sports like Boxing; this in turn gave full contact striking arts a fighting chance. Arts like Boxing, Kickboxing and Muay Thai were then added to the training regimen of MMA fighters and what we now know as a Complete Mixed Martial Arts Program was born. We use this tried and true combination of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and Muay Thai in our MMA program at NYMAG.

The History Channel's Terry Schappert Talks about Training at NYMAG
"As a Green Beret, every skill that I train for the battlefield must prepare me to fight and win in the worst conditions. Martial arts training is no exception. What I learn must be practical, simple and effective - but it must be taught in a way that I can understand quickly and incorporate in my skill set.

Not every great fighter makes a great instructor, but the team of trainers at NYMAG are all skilled and accomplished in their disciplines, as well as very effective teachers. Everyone is welcome to train here. The atmosphere is relaxed but intense. If you want to get in better shape more efficiently, train here; if you want to compete in Jiu Jitsu or Muay Thai, train here. And if you need to learn how to defend yourself and your family in today's world, you BETTER come here, the instructors at NYMAG know that the disciplines they teach all come from a need to survive and win on any battlefield -- a dark alley, an MMA cage, or the unforgiving streets of the Middle East.

When you train at NYMAG you will have fun, but you will be pushed. You will meet friends who will fight you with all they've got. You will get stronger, faster, tougher and develop skills that make you a better fighter and a better person. That's why I'm here - I don't have time for stuff that doesn't work, so I train at NYMAG - and that's why you should be here too."

- Terry Schappert, US Army Special Forces Medic, and host of History Channel's "Warriors with Terry Schappert"

Real People. Real Results ...

"I am a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and since retiring from the military I felt as if I was missing an aspect of my military life into transitioning to civilian life.  I searched for a place to train the way I trained while I was in the military, a place that preached values, ethics, hard work, and respect.  Eventually I was fortunate enough to find NYMAG, where from the first day I entered I felt like family.  Everyone was extremely helpful in teaching proper technique from the great instructors down to other students while continuing to challenge me on a physical level.  Even now as a Certified Personal Trainer I continue to
work my schedule around training times at NYMAG so I can stay in top physical condition.  NYMAG has given back to me an aspect of life that I was so worried of losing after my retirement and I am so thankful to have found such a wonderful place to train whether it be competitive or just for those that are interested in learning something new.  Being a healthy active individual is a way of life and training at NYMAG is definitely the right direction to go!" - Kiel King

"I lost over 100 pounds and kept it off and only continue to get into better shape with MMA training. MMA isnt just an amazing work out but its a life style change. 100 pounds later I dont just have a new body but im a new person. I continue to learn, grow and change for the better now training at NYMAG. The trainers are amazing and im proud to now call NYMAG my one and only home for mma training."
- Stephen Foley

I started at NYMAG about 10 months ago and was 265lbs. the doctor told me I was at risk for pretty much everything. I joined because I wanted to do something different. From day 1 everyone was friendly, helpful, and patient with me. Fastfoward to 2011 and i have lost over 105 lbs just coming to class and training and being disciplined. NYMAG has me in the best shape of my life and has given me confidence and allowed me to meet some of the best people around !!!"- Andrew Fernandez, NYPD"

"My child and I have been going to classes at NYMAG for over a year and it is the best choice ever made for the both of us. NYMAG implements a system that has improved my childs success not only in the gym but also at home and in the classroom at school. NYMAG has given my son and me an awesome common interest to experiece together. The cardio workout is like no other, the skill and form of each technique taught by every teacher is definately top notch. I like that EVERYBODY at NYMAG is a big family. Look left, look right, either way there is always more than one person willing to help. I believe that Martial Arts is the best way to get and stay in shape. Not to mention the total benefit of leaving every class with another piece of knowledge in self defense and most important, self confidence. Respect." - Ron Arthurs

"I have been involved in martial arts since I was 8 years old and trained at various places in the area until this year when I came to train at NYMAG. Only if I could go back in time I would of started training at NYMAG a long time ago. NYMAG not only provides a state of the art facility but the quality of training and people there make it the best martial arts gym to be apart of. I take jiu-jitsu and muai thai classes and I have become better in all aspects of the game from physical shape to technical skills. Whether you want to get in shape, pick up a hobby or compete this is the place for you!" - Ray Khoury

"I have been training at NYMAG since I was in high school over 8 years ago. It is hands down the best place to train Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Boxing and Kick-Boxing in the Hudson Valley. I can say that because I trained in all 3 disciplines. Furthermore, the level of training at NYMAG is second to none, I know this because I have trained at other Schools while I was away, and the

knowlege and skills I learned always proved to be equal to or better than other schools. Whether your're young or old, skilled or unskilled, there is a place at NYMAG for everyone, I would never train anywhere else in this area, hands down.‎"  - Alex Labrinos

"I've been at NYMAG since January 2008. Being a part of NYMAG is like being part of a family. Learning Jiu Jitsu has changed my life, Jiu jitsu becomes a lifestyle after a while. I've lost 80 lbs. training jiu jitsu ... the journey has just begun for me."
- Santino Milanese

"I love this gym. From day 1, you feel like you have joined a family. Everyone is friendly, you get individual attention, and you learn at your own pace. I recommend this gym to everyone. It is a great place to learn fighting skills."
‎ - Danny S

"I've been training at NYMAG for a year and have learned so much from everyone, the team is great we have great teachers who break down moves and help us when we need it, overall the feel of the gym is a BIG family, if your thinking about joining any gym this should be the one you join!‎" - Andy M

"This gym is awesome! Whether you are training to compete or just want to get fit in a fun and challenging way, this is the place! All of the instructors are amazing and are always willing to give extra help when you need it. Even as a busy mother of three I am always able to find a class that fits into my hectic schedule. As a former student of Tae Kwon Do, I was at first hesitant about the Jiu-jitsu. Very quickly however, the benefits of being able to comfortably and effectively fight on the
ground were made obvious. Especially for women, this is absolutely one of the best self-defense tools to have. I have always been made to feel welcome and encouraged to work hard and do my best. In addition to the quality of the training, the business practices of this organization deserve mentioning. The cost is reasonable for the services offered and they always do what they say they are going to do. I have been constantly pleased by this. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to train with World Champion Athletes in a World Class Facility. I would highly recommend this gym to anyone!"  - C Torresson

"As a complete novice to any Martial Art, I had my reservations about signing up for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Two months later, I've lost weight, improved my muscle definition, increased my stamina and met some amazing people. The environment is so friendly, you feel compelled to test your limits and then push the envelope. You're compl...etely free to progress at your own pace and participate however much you like without any pressure. This really makes the experience feel comfortable
and safe. I used to go to a gym that greeted me with hassles finding a free locker, long lines at machines and instruction (personal trainer) that cost a lot of extra money. In an environment like that, it was impossible for me to stay motivated. At NYMAG, I show up for the particular class I want to take without annoying lines. I'm given personal attention and excellent instruction at no addtional cost. The workouts are intense but I'm getting results I can feel and see - This keeps me motivated and feeling good about myself. If you're thinking about signing up or checking it out, stop waiting and DO IT! You won't regret it." - Felipe Revilla

"My game has greatly improved and its a great feeling."

- Matthew Zuniga

"This is a one of a kind training facility with expert instruction. The school has something to offer practitioners at all skill levels. Weather you are traveling and just need a place to keep your skills sharp or you live in the area and are looking for the best instruction you can find, NYMAG's professional staff of instructors can provide you with an exceptional experience."
- Frank Kravchak

"Best place to learn and train BJJ and MMA in the area!"

- Earl Layumas, Mid Hudson Aikido

"The most respecting fun filled learning environment you could ever be in. Awesome and very knowledgeable teachers that are very patient. It's the best place to learn self deference."
- Cody Welsh

"My son and I just went down to the new facility on Rt. 9 for our Sunday class. Though not quite done we were greeted with a HUGE space with all new mats and ready to go. I have learned over the years just having a roof overhead is a blessing but add heat and lights and you are living large. This goes way beyond. With the soon to be finished cage and the heavy bags this certainly is the best facility I have been to in this area by far. Kudos to Gene on providing for his students." - Joe Liggera

"Gene and the staff at NYMAG take all their passion, experience, and technical abilities and present them within a no frills -- yet certainly not dumbed down -- curriculum. Plus, you'll feel like part of the NYMAG family in no time. Excellent teaching style."

-- Erik Schlimmer. 2009 Oneonta State University Adjunct Instructor of the Year.

"I've been training at this school for about 8 months and cannot get enough of the classes. I drive 23 miles each way from were I live 3 times a week just to train at NYMAG and if I had the time to do it 7 days a week I would. Great Staff, great enviroment, great equipment and at the perfect price!!!! Do yourself a favor and check out NYMAG, u wont regret it."
 - Mayco Lungo

"I've been in the Martial Arts longer than most of the people reading this have been alive. Gene's technical and teaching skills are the BEST! He truly understands the "essence" of BJJ. The atmosphere is great for learning....No big egos....everyone works together and is very helpful. The facility itself is top notch. This is the place to go!"  - Dave Arnold

Gene Simco & Chuck Lidell

Gene Simco (NYMAG Founder & BJJ Instructor) happens to be a very important part of The Pit, our curriculum, and our fight team. Gene is a valuable resource to us, as well as a good friend. He worked Gan McGee's corner in his last UFC fight, Chuck Lidell, Team Quest (Randy Coture, Matt Linland, Dan Henderson), BJ Penn all respect Gene and find his book (The Master Text) a great learning tool.
– John Hackleman, UFC Trainer

John Kessler - MMA Competitor

"Over the past six years that I have been training jiu-jitsu I have been greatly influenced by the instruction that I have received from Gene Simco. He has played an instrumental role in shaping me as an instructor, BJJ competitor, MMA fighter, and in general as a warrior. Gene has always been willing to go out of his way to hone not only my technical skills but also my fighting strategy. When I am hungry for the answers of what really makes techniques work in order to win Gene always has a detailed and concise response. When I have a problem handling group dynamic as growing teacher Gene has a new perspective to clear my way and reestablish growth for me and my students. I very much appreciate Gene's openness and lack of ego when it comes to jiu-jitsu. I have been shown that with an open mind I can learn from all that I encounter. Gene has also been very open and patient with my transient ways of traveling about the country to train. Aside from the training environment, Gene is just a really nice guy that I like to hang out with; I feel comfortable just being myself with Gene and the guys at NYMAG. I really like that Gene has not lost his perspective of jiu-jitsu as a combative art and not just a sport. This is where training with Gene early has given me a solid foundation to apply my skills in a sport tournament, an MMA fight, a self-defense situation, or even in a spur of the moment challenge match." - John Kessler - MMA Competitor (4-1 King of the Cage)

Hudson Valley Magazine on World Champion & NYMAG BJJ Instructor, Steven Olivier

Steven Olivier: Jiu-Jitsu Master -
By: Jessica Friedlander

Samurai-born Jiu-jitsu (also Jujitsu) — meaning the "art of softness" or "the way of yielding" — is a high-contact sport that incorporates the best of judo martial arts practices, and usually emphasizes techniques like throwing, immobilizing and pinning, joint-locking, choking, and strangling (comparable to other martial arts systems, such as karate).

If you're interested in jiu-jitsu, or just looking for the motivation to take on a new activity to get your heart pumping and satisfy your competitive side, read on: http://www.hvmag.com/Hudson-Valley-Magazine/January-2009/Steven-Olivier/

West Point - US Military Academy

"I recently had the pleasure of having Gene Simco teach a BJJ class to a group of Army officers and United States Military Academy cadets. I am currently in my sixth year as a practitioner of BJJ. I have served as a combatives instructor at the Infantry School at Fort Benning, Georgia and currently I am teaching combatives at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Gene organized a quick drill to quickly access the level of proficiency of each fighter in the room, and then began to teach. Gene has the unique ability to simplify the simple and get you focused on the importance of the basics. He personally worked with every fighter in the room, and at the end of two hours every student had improved their ground fighting game. For the next three days, we drilled the techniques taught by Gene, and our ability to pass the guard has improved drastically. Many folks that I have trained with always want the high end "flying arm-bar" type of instruction.

Gene quickly showed us where we were sloppy with our basics. Within seconds of listening to Gene, watching him teach and move on the ground, you realize that he is world class and worth listening to. Gene has a professional but personable style and is able to speak and teach at the appropriate level to each student. I would recommend learning from Gene personally or through the use of his books and videos to anyone wanting to improve their military/police combatives, sport BJJ, MMA, or self defense skills."

Gene welcome to the Group."

"Anthony Vetro (NYMAG Striking & MMA Instructor) came to me with a strong foundation in western boxing. As my student for almost two decades, his striking power has made him a formidable opponent both in and out of the ring. Anthony has vast experience in many aspects of hand to hand combat and is a premier instructor on many levels".

"I have been doing martial arts, boxing and wrestling since 1973. Gene Improved my grappling game 200%. He not only has proven himself as a good Grappler on the mats but is an outstanding BJJ coach as well. I recommend anyone to train with Gene, no matter what their style or background is. Gene has a keen sense of working around a student's strengths and weaknesses and giving them a solid realistic fighting game, whether for BJJ, NHB or for the street."
– John "Johnny Bombs" Carlo
Pro Boxer & Founder AKBF

Law Enforcement
"I have trained at NYMAG with John Riley and James Tobin for a little less than three years and I believe they have one of the most effective approaches to the development of BJJ. They allow a practitioner to attain a level of technicality to BJJ unlike any other instructor I trained under in other schools. BJJ is a major part of my life and I will never stop doing it." - John Staton (LEO)

"I recently had the opportunity to train with Gene Simco while I was in New York visiting. As a beginner in the art, Gene dramatically improved my skills with his vast knowledge and easy to understand teaching style. Gene was sensitive to my job as a Police Officer and incorporated skills that would help me on the street. Gene is a great teacher and an asset to all students under his instruction. Thanks."
– Officer Chris Irsa, SWAT Team, Portage Police, Indiana
